Enhancing the lives of women and youth in our community

and around the world.

Rise and Shine with us on Thursday mornings!

Published Nov. 6, 2025

President Paula opened today’s meeting

Invocation: Lydia spoke elequently about how interesting and concerning the last 2 weeks have been, She volunteers at Bread and Broth, a charitable, all-volunteer organization that has been easing hunger in the Lake Tahoe South Shore for years. This week the number of people who used their meal service increased from approximately 120 to 160, with a large increase of people requesting take home dinners in addition to their meal. The Government shutdown that is affecting SNAP is making it harder on hungry people and the non-profits that serve them. As a society we need to do better, as a country we are accountable. We have enough to help people if we can set aside the greed for wealth, power or luxury.

What is Sunshine?

Our “Sunshine” is something we do each week to promote those who need more support and a bit of a pick-me-up or for those who are celebrating!

Sunshine continues for our warrior Wendy, who has completed her LAST chemo therapy! Yay! That doesn’t mean that treatment is over, but the hardest part is finished! She is feeling more energetic and less “foggy” so that’s a huge win! Continued sunshine for Pat Miller and Jim Barr (Jim is working on regaining strength).

Guests today included: Natasha Schue and Elaine Welch. So nice to have you both with us today! Come again soon.

Today’s speaker was Dr. Clare Rudolph, OB/GYN from Barton Health. Dr. Rudolph’s presentation was on Breast Cancer Awareness. She is a board-certified Obstetrics and Gynecology physician and the Medical Director for Barton Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Rudolph provides care for gynecological, obstetrical, infertility, menstruation, and endometrial conditions.

Doctor Rudolph’s presentation is available below, but many interesting points were made during her talk. 1 in 8 women are likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer and it is 2nd most common cancer to be diagnosed in women behind lung cancer. Mammograms don’t increase your chance of getting breast cancer. Because of early detection methods, the current 5 year survival rate is 90%. Mammograms are most often suggested between the ages of 40 – 74. After age 75 it becomes a personal choice, using shared decision making between you and your doctor based on your life span and health span estimates.

There are many myths about breast cancer causes: Underwire bras, breast implants, mammograms, antiperspirants, abortions or HPV vaccines. Don’t fall prey to false information, talk to your doctor about how often you should be screened based on your Family history and Genetics.
