Today’s speaker was Chief Jim Drennan, of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue.
Jim Drennan started originally as a reserve firefighter for South Lake Tahoe in January of 2000, going full time in December 2002. Since that time he has moved through the ranks to Battalion Chief in 2016, and then as interim fire chief this past spring. He is now “very excited” to be the City’s new fire chief. Chief Drennan is a collaborative leader who leans into regional initiatives to improve response capabilities throughout the Basin by dropping boundaries and working collaboratively with surrounding communities and states. “He not only makes South Lake Tahoe safer but works to make the entire Basin safer for residents and visitors alike.
Jim told us all about the history of the SLT Fire Department, how things have changed and where we are now.
The job of fire fighter has gotten harder over the last 10 years due to many factors including initiatives to stop logging in California (this causes logging/fire access roads not to be cleared), climate change effects, budget issues and a drop in people wanting to Thanks to obtaining grant money recently, there have been 7 new firemen hired and station 2 was re-opened. A South Shore fuel division was also started in the basin, which allows for fuel reduction efforts to proceed.
We all thank the fire fighters for all their hard work, not only in fighting active fires, but in working hard to prevent new ones.
