Soroptimist SNR Conference

Lisa Huard — Sat, 15 Jun 2024 18:08:58 +0000

This annual conference, held in Reno, allows each participant for a venue of information, friendship, and a common spirit! Our club had 10 members attend the conference and all learned more about Soroptimist and how to strengthen our club and more about each other. Our club provides funds for members to attend these conferences through our weekly "Happy Dollars". This is a time when members can share news about their lives and provide for the growth of our club.

The SITS Scholarship Celebration is something we look forward to every year. The more funds we raise, the more youth we can celebrate! We had such an amazing morning celebrating all of the many middle and high school Scholarship and Most Improved recipients at our morning celebration. Thank you to the families who raised these amazing young people, thank you to the school staff who guide them along the way, thank you to the community which financially supports this effort, and thank you to the SITS members who put in many hours to organize the event, evaluate the applications, and provide the breakfast for our guests!

On March 21, 2024 we recognized several amazing young ladies and women. Annually, we recognize youth in our schools with the GIVE Award (Girls Into Volunteer Experiences.) This year’s winners included Emily Banks, Sydney Irwin, and Milan Riva. We also recognized Cheryl Breitwieser with the Soroptimist Ruby Award for all of her work with our community’s Bread and Broth program. The Live Your Dream Award included the 2019 recipient, Toni Wesley, as we recognized Araceli Perez, Cynthia Rojas, and Astraea Marion. What an amazing morning it was! And a special thank you to SNR Governor Lisa Fitzgerald for joining us this special morning.

Middle School Writing & Poster Contest

Lisa Huard — Fri, 01 Mar 2024 17:04:10 +0000

What an amazing morning it was as we celebrated several winners of the Challenge Day Writing & Poster Contests! As it turned out, all of the recipients were young ladies and we couldn’t have been more proud of each of them. We are fortunate that over 30 years ago, STMS Teacher/Advisor Larry Lambdin brought Challenge Day to our middle school youth. This now, nation wide program, has evolved over the years and we’ve watched it, and our youth grow! Participants experience powerful love and belonging, connect across lines of difference and move toward creating the culture they want in their school. Prompts for our writers and artists included their ideas to change their middle school for the better. The motto of Challenge Day has been and remains, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

They addressed things they want changed in their middle school with the biggest themes being bullying and racism. We believe with their help and insight, things can change.

Thank you to the STMS staff, to SITS Middle School Projects Committee, and to the young women who spoke and illustrated from their hearts.
