Meet President – Shelly Martinez
Mr. Fred Rogers told a story about how when he was a boy, something bad had happened in the world, and he was upset by it. He asked his mother why bad things were allowed to happen. His mother replied that she didn’t know why bad or unjust things happened but she did know that when bad things did happen, that it was important to pay attention to all of the “helpers,” the good people who helped others and contributed to the good in the world.
Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra is an inspired collective group of “helpers,” and I am very proud to be part of this amazing sisterhood. Helping takes on many different roles in context as a SITS member. It may mean leading an effort to improve living conditions for children in our own community, funding an educational scholarship for a young girl in Uganda, mentoring a group of middle school students, advocating for tougher human trafficking laws, supporting a community garden in an underserved area, providing emergency disaster relief, establishing a literacy program, or helping a young musician to live her dream of going to Julliard.
Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra is a not a one size fits all type of club. Each of us brings our own vision, unique perspective, and strengths to create a space that celebrates good works, a cooperative spirit, sharing, caring, and sisterhood.
